Inclusions in Baltic amber

The most famous fossil insects are those found in Baltic amber, a substance secreted by trees when damaged traps insects and covers them in the sap that will preserve them for ever. When the resin was first formed occasionally animals or plants were trapped or enveloped by the falling resin. The trapped inclusions where preserved with remarkable level of detail. When viewed under a magnifying glass the inclusion appears as though it was trapped only yesterday. The level of preservation extends down to internal organs and in some instances individual cells. 

Jurrasic Park movie made Baltic amber famous

The movie Jurassic Park was based on the DNA of a dinosaur being removed from blood removed from a mosquito preserved for over 100 million years in Baltic amber. Most of the insects embalmed in amber are extinct species.

What can be found in amber?

There are many different types of inclusions that can be found in amber these have include: Flies, Spiders, Pseudo Scorpions, Cockroaches, Termites, Leaf-Hoppers, Beetles, Ants, Wasps, Bees - The list goes on and most species are represented in amber collections around the world.

The most frequent inclusions to be found in amber, particularly Baltic are examples of the Diptera Family, or true flies. Quite often these are Mycetophilidea species, often referred to as fungus gnats. These tiny little flies would have lived on the fungus growing on the rotting vegetation of the amber forest of which no doubt there was enough to support an enormous population.

The Baltic amber deposits are the largest in the world. The key deposits are located on or around the Baltic peninsula and can be found in Poland, Germany, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Denmark, Sweden, Holland, the United Kingdom and Belorussia.
